George Spafford R.C.A.
A primitive painter
He is referred to as a "primitive" painter, primitive describes those artists whose technique is without the sophisticated habits acquired by professionals. Within the naivete which is the obvious characteristics of such work, he shows a keen awareness of the oddity of things which other artists, more conventional in attitude, might overlook. This, together with his sensitivity to colour, placing and proportion of shapes, gives his work its individuality and justification. He has been elected successively to the committees of the Red Rose Guild of Designer Craftsmen, Friends of the Manchester City Art Galleries, and Friends of the Whitworth Art Gallery. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art in 1987, a Full Member and also a Council Member in 1989 and Honary Treasurer in 1995. His paintings have been exhibited in various galleries such as Oriel Plas Glyn y Weddw, the gallery in Kings College, Cambridge and the Royal Academy in 1992. His paintings are currently in various private collections. George Spafford lives in Wilmslow, Cheshire (01625 528-871) and in Wales (01286 830-681). |
