The
work is essentially the result of community arts in
action. A local fish shop -Kimfish company- at Penrhyn
quay helped us to freeze twenty blocks of ice in their
deep freeze. Sculptor Ivor Richards and Fire artists and
jugglers Sircas Circus combined their skill for a
spontaneous evening event. The grounds of the little used gallery were filled. To the organisers surprise a large samba band appeared and the samba dance teacher led groups of children around the structure. It was a remarkable atmosphere, quite out of character for the small Welsh town. Some things simply tap into the collective unconscious and work so well. The strength and weakness of community arts is that it is so ad hoc at times but within this magic happens. The photographs are a record of the impermanence of the elements that make community arts live. |
