Ishbel McWhirter lives and works in London and
North Wales. From an early age she came under the influence of two of the most liberating
personalities of post-war Britain - A.S. Neill who ran Summerhill School and Oskar
Kokoschka whose pupil she also became. Until
recently she was better known for her portraits of which it has been said that "with
spare bold strokes ... she manages to find personal essences in her sitters' expressions
and postures, somehow making the viewer's point of focus lust a little behind the eyes of
the subiect."
Now her landscapes and flowers are becoming more fully
appreciated. Just as with her portraits she goes right to the essence of her subject which
can be seen in the immaculately beautiful studies of flowers.
Ishbel has exhibited widely and her work is in many private
collections including the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum and
the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. |
