Further examples of Helen's
work can be seen by clicking here My most recent work is inspired by standing stones and burial chambers or cromlechs as they are known in Wales. They are imbued with such a magical presence and aura, and have also formed part of the rural Welsh environment in which my roots lie. The cromlechs have a feeling of solidity and weight, and impress me with their size and monumantalism. Such stone constructions are often found in very isolated locations - away from towns and modern life; relics of an ancient civilisation. Some of the stones are also marked with Ogham writing, linear symbols from the Celtic period. I have recently been using natural materials such as linens and cottons, along with materials which hold their shape such as paper yarn and wire. Recent tapestries and paintings have also included the use of wax as a resist (batik). This gives the tapestry a more dense and heavy feeling, and also gives the tapestry more movement and spontaneity. Wax seems sympathetic to the tapestry medium, and it's qualities enhance the work.
