PRESS RELEASE Royal Cambrian Academy, Crown Lane, Conwy01492 593413 email rca@nol.co.uk THE WELSH CONNECTION Drawings and Prints by Alun Leach Jones, David Carpanini, Peter Prendergast 24th October -22nd November 1998 Alun Leach Jones is one of Australias most respected artists, though he was raised in the North Wales village of Glasfryn. His paintings have been described as a synthesis between external observation and inner vision. His works use the expressive power of colour, line and affinities of shape exploding in a riot of primary pigments in motion. The relationship between science, poetry and art holds a fascination for him, fusing together in many of his works. He has studios in New York and Sydney but uses his rich Celtic heritage in several of his works. He says that as I grow older, it seems to me that I increasingly draw upon my feelings for my Welsh background. In 1996 he was elected as a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and this is the first Exhibition of his work in Conwy.
David Carpanini David Carpanini was born in the coal mining village of Abergwynfri South Wales, and is now Professor of Art at the University of Wolverhampton. The etchings that are part of this show are strong in impact; roads rush blackly into infinity, two up two down miners cottages sadly terrace themselves along lonely streets with barely a sign of humanity. The spectator appears to be swiftly taken out of town though the inhabitants of these streets are the background for close-up figures who are scrupulously and minutely observed, banding themselves together defensively in the rainy grey atmosphere. Superficially they seem to be very realistic, but they are also very abstract in so far as one shape is placed against another. Shapes and objects relate to each other, and the people in the situations show these narrative elements.
Peter Prendergast Peter Prendergast was also born in South Wales, but has lived in North Wales much of his working life. He is a major figure in Welsh art, having been Principal of Bangor Art Foundation course for many years. The drawings in this Exhibition are the culmination of many years work, and some will be retrospective and some more recent. With numbers of paintings in public and private collections, many many Exhibitions, articles and broadcasts, Peter Prendergast has knowledge and understanding of his beloved Wales, the whole showing through in these magnificent drawings. Maer ysgythriadau syn rhan or sioe yma yn drawiadol; lonydd yn brysion ddu i anfeidroldeb, rhesi o fythynod bach y glowyr yn estyn yn drist ar hyd strydoedd unig, bron heb unrhyw arwyddocad o fywyd yno. Maen ymddangos fod y gwyliwr yn cael ei ddenu allan or dref er fod trigolion y strydoedd yn gefndir i ffigyrau agos syn cael eu gwylion fanwl a chydwybodol, maent yn casglu gydai gilydd yn amddiffynnol yn yr awyrgylch llwyd a glawiog.
