"Many artists find themselves working in and being known for one style alone. There is another type of artist who is always discovering new subjects, experimenting with new materials and finding new ways of self expression. I feel that I belong to this second group. I have never felt that my work fits comfortably into a tight category or style; this is not my aim. My work is very varied, both in style and media. Sometimes I work in a fairly traditional manner, using gouache in washes similar to a water-colour technique, at times the work is quite 'graphic' using the gouache thickly in solid, well defined areas of bold colour. At other times it is more vigorous and expressive, drawing more on imagination than reality. I use a variety of media, usually mixed - ink, oil pastel, gouache, crayon, and linocut. My paintings and prints are mainly concerned with the landscape and subjects within it that interest me. Coming to live in Bethesda has bought me closer to these subjects, some of which are becoming recurring themes in my work." |
